Martin Reilly (1820-1904) from Eyre St. in Galway was regarded as the greatest piper of his era. This presentation will focus on the elements that contribute to the wonderful musicality in the one surviving example of Martin Reilly’s music. It will also look briefly at his life and at the national and international circumstances that led to and enabled the recording of his music, with a particular focus on the organisations and people, principally Éamonn Ceannt, involved in bequeathing this precious legacy to us all. Pat Mitchell is a highly respected researcher of uilleann pipe music and has published a series of the most important and significant books and articles on the subject.
